On CRUX, Al Wootton drifts deeper into rhythmic abstraction, debuting on the storied Sähkö label with a quartet of longform experiments that thread dub techno, minimalism, and global percussion into a shadowy, tactile ritual. The sonic textures feel unearthed rather than composed—each track steeped in degraded tape hiss, distended echoes, and trance-inducing hand drums. Wootton's evolution from the dancefloor grit of his Deadboy alias to this lucid, percussive terrain has been gradual but purposeful, crystallized on his Trule label and honed on 2024’s Rhythm Archives. Here, his drumwork mutates from Skull Disco-like sub-pressure into Saharan dream states, Balkan echoes, and frayed dub illusions. A record of rare cohesion and sonic maturity - ritualistic, deliberate, and defiantly out of time.
